Massive Magnitude 8.7 Earthquake strikes Kamchatka Peninsula | July 29, 2025

A massive earthquake measuring magnitude 8.7 has struck off the eastern coast of Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula region, the epicentre was 136km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city in Russia’s Far East.

This event was initially assessed the quake as magnitude 8.0. Nearly an hour and a half after the earthquake struck an aftershock of magnitude 6.9 struck. It was centred 147 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia at a depth of 10km. Strong aftershocks are being reported.

Waves could hit the coasts of Russia and Japan “within the next three hours”. Japan has issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to 1m along the country’s Pacific coast.
