LIMB-OCCULTED M9.4 Solar Flare | Nov 25, 2024

A significant Solar Blast just took place behind the eastern limb of the solar corona November 25th that registered very close to ‘X-Class’ would have been a much larger event if not obscured by the limb itself, Officially peaking to M9.4 at 7:46am this new active region will turn the solar disk in the next 36 hours and we could expect a high potential for major X-Class solar flares later this week.

A limb-occulted solar flare, also known as a behind-the-limb flare, is a solar flare where the footpoints are hidden by the solar limb. When observed from Earth, the flare is visible if the emission source is high enough.

Limb-occulted solar flares can provide valuable information about the structure and spectrum of the coronal loop-top.They can also be a good source of information about hard X-ray loop-top sources.

Some characteristics of limb-occulted solar flares include:
  • Hard X-ray spectra: Limb-occulted flares tend to have softer hard X-ray spectra.
  • Gradual component: Limb-occulted flares have a gradual component, but it’s much weaker than the spikes early in the event.
Solar flares produce high-energy particles and radiation that can be dangerous to living organisms. However, Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protect us from the effects of solar flares on the surface of the planet.
